We are very happy to announce that Alex Rice has joined Development Seed as a map data engineer! He is building software to create, query, wrangle and visualize open data. He works with the Map Data Team contributing to the growing ecosystem of open source software within OpenStreetMap, FOSS4G and other open geospatial communities. He is experienced in front-end UI development as well as back-end development of servers, databases and shell scripts.
Previously Alex worked at Descartes Labs making web applications to view and analyze geospatial data in the cloud. He also worked in the genetics/genomics space for the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR).
When not at the computer, he likes getting out into the mountains for hiking, camping, canoeing and river rafting. He lives with his family in New Mexico USA.
He is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Certificate in Geographic Information Systems, Science and Cartography (GIS). He received a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of New Mexico in Linguistic Anthropology with a Mathematics minor.
