Today marks the official independence of the world’s newest country, the Republic of South Sudan. In January a referendum was held in the region and nearly 99% of voters chose to split from Sudan to form the new country.
The seven main world maps on MapBox.com have been updated to reflect the change. Previously on our maps, South Sudan had been displayed as a breakaway region with dashed lines and italic text indicating its unofficial status. It is now displayed as a fully independent country.
