This afternoon Eric will preview TileMill, our full-featured map design studio that will go beta next week, at the Tech@State conference. Eric is speaking on the “Open Source and Mapping Data: Geospatial Applications” panel at the event, specifically discussing why custom base maps are important for data visualization. The TileMill demo will show how users can quickly and easily take shapefiles and design maps for the web using the CSS like language Carto.
While Eric will show a live demo as part of his talk, you can see a walk through of key parts of the process in his presentation slides.
We’ll post more details about TileMill here next week once the beta release is out. If you’re at Tech@State and want to see a live demo of TileMill, look for Alex — he’ll be showing off the tool throughout the day.
Tomorrow Will, AJ, and Tom will be at the Tech@State Unconference giving live demos of TileMill and talking about what can be done with the tool to folks interested in custom mapping. We’re excited to participate in this event alongside the organizers at the National Democratic Institute, who we’ve worked closely with on mapping projects like AfghanistanElectionData.org.
