John is a cloud engineer at Development Seed. He has broad experience with developing tools that manage, process, store and distribute geospatial datasets in the cloud. John strives to automate his development and deployment processes to build durable, well-tested software. He is passionate about making geospatial datasets easily accessible to users of diverse backgrounds, maximizing the positive impact the data can have on the world.

Prior to joining Development Seed, John worked as a contractor to the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) data center where the Landsat archive is managed. He worked on moving Landsat data to the cloud and processing it to Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) format to take advantage of the cloud infrastructure. John also worked on the Landsat Collection 2 Processing team where they generated over 8PB of public data. On the team, he worked on the system that managed the containers that processed the collection. Additionally, he worked on an API to support traditional access of the data through EarthExplorer, ensuring that users could access Collection 2 data without prior cloud experience.

John is a graduate of South Dakota State University where he earned a B.S. in computer science. Outside of work, he enjoys playing baseball, basketball, and racquetball. John also enjoys watching movies, playing board games, and spending time with his wife and family.
