Development Seed is uniquely set up with a distributed team of remote staff with a satellite office in Lisbon.

We are looking for an experienced professional to join our finance and administration team. In this role, you will be responsible for performing and overseeing accounting transactions and financial/accounting analysis associated with global revenue and payroll for the organization. You will play a pivotal role in evolving our accounting and operations practices as our global business continues to expand.

About the role

In this role, you will have the opportunity to put into practice a wide range of accounting and operational practices. You will perform a combination of structured and repetitive tasks, short term projects and process improvement. You will oversee revenue-related activities at the organization and be responsible for overseeing and ensuring accuracy of our subsidiary revenue operations. You will close revenue monthly and identify variances to forecast. You will prepare global payroll including collaborating with employers of record on our monthly payroll operations. You will assist with team member onboarding and benefits administration. You will collaborate closely with our project operations team to gather important financial insights and help facilitate the management of our projects. You will contribute to better define our processes and find solutions to accounting strategy and management challenges.

We are looking for a team member to oversee the following business and corporate financial responsibilities:

  • Financial analysis and reporting - global revenue oversight, including providing support to our Lisbon subsidiary with invoicing and revenue recognition
  • Project Operations - you will oversee the financial performance and status of our projects and collaborate with and as an extended member of the Project Operations team
  • Growth Team - you will support our Growth team by assisting with the financial aspects of our proposals when needed and support vendor requirements associated with new and existing projects
  • Global Payroll - you will prepare US and Canadian payroll, coordinate with our subsidiary and employers of record for global payroll, oversee all geographies where we have team members to ensure local compliance and required registrations
  • Policy and Process - perform accounting, finance, and operations policy and process updates and improvements. You will play an integral role in implementing a new accounting system.
  • Operational support - perform operational tasks in support of the team, including onboarding team members, benefits administration, managing online service accounts, travel and expense management oversight including systems and processes

This position requires residency and work authorization in the United States (preference within eastern standard or central time zones) or Lisbon, Portugal.

You have:

  • Specialized studies in accounting, finance, or related fields
  • 3+ years of experience in accounting, payroll and operations
  • You know your way around a chart of accounts, with journal entries, and with financial analyses; solid understanding of U.S. accounting
  • You speak fluent English, portuguese language knowledge a plus
  • You have experience using financial and team collaboration/management software (ie Quickbooks, ERP’s, bank feeds, G-Suite, GitHub, Slack, Hubspot, etc)

You ideally have experience:

  • With international accounting
  • Implementing accounting systems
  • DCAA and/or government accounting knowledge and experience are a plus
  • Working in small fast-moving teams and decentralized management structures
  • Coordinating across multiple time zones

The Team

Our Finance & Administration team, a sub-team within the larger Operations Team, is composed of three team members of which you will be a part. The larger Operations Team is made up of multi-disciplinary professionals who serve as the organization’s connective tissue. We work in a flat management style rooted in cross-collaboration and continuous communication to collaborate closely together and work hand-in-hand with our technical talent to grow a successful company.

We work cross-collaboratively to drive strategic and operational initiatives that scale the business while ensuring our ever-evolving culture is grounded in our values. Ultimately, Operations is responsible for scaling the impact of our talented team so our partners across the globe have the tools and data they need to improve the planet.
