I am pleased to announce that the skilled data and annotation team from DevSeed is separating to become an independent employee-owned company called GeoCompas. The Geo AI practice at Development Seed has grown, and the GeoCompas team has been essential in providing crucial mapping, annotation, QA, and automation support. Their expertise in geodata is now available to everyone.

I am thrilled about the potential of this exceptional team and the achievements they will make in the future.

Meet GeoCompas

GeoCompas is a company based in Ayacucho, Peru, specializing in mapping, labeling, and AI automation. The team offers the following services:

  • Rapid, high-quality mapping
  • AI-assisted mapping and QA
  • Data labeling and annotation
  • ML Ops and Infrastructure
  • OSM-as-a-service

The team possesses excellent skills in constructing customized labeling and Quality Assurance workflows. The automation tools they use enable them to work not only at a fast pace but also with high precision and accuracy. They are particularly adept at handling situations that require quickness, quality, and flexibility, such as disaster mapping or swift model development and iteration.

The GeoCompas team has more than ten years of experience supporting Geospatial AI and mapping. In 2014, Mapbox recruited this team, which played a vital role in Mapbox's global basemap built on OpenStreetMap and updated daily. The team is active in contributing to OSM, with some impressive statistics about their contributions. In 2017, the team joined Development Seed as the company was expanding.

A New Chapter

Establishing themselves as an independent entity is a logical evolution for the GeoCompas team. We will continue to work with GeoCompas as our sole provider of data services. Meanwhile, the team can grow and expand their services through partnerships with other organizations.

We really enjoy working with the team at GeoCompas, and we intend to continue contracting with them for all our future data-related projects. It's always amazing when our research and AI work aligns with the GeoCompas team. However, sometimes, our AI work takes a different direction, and we have found ourselves focusing more on similarity search and foundation model work. We believe that it is important for the GeoCompas team to have the opportunity to learn and grow from other partners, and we will celebrate their work, whether it is with us or other organizations.

You can reach out to GeoCompas on their website and GitHub.

What we're doing.
