Happy Halloween! In addition to the holiday related festivities tonight, this week marks the start of DC Week, a week long festival that brings together designers, developers, artists, and entrepreneurs through parties and other events. Wednesday, November 2

7:00–9:00 pm

GeoDC Meetup: Maps in Government : This month’s GeoDC meetup will feature short discussions by federal geographical information officers from the FCC, EPA, and NOAA about how they use maps and data in their work, what limitations and challenges they face, and where they’d like to take this work in the future. The discussion will provide good insight into how the government is and wants to be using maps to improve efficiencies and better share the stories behind their data with the public.

Friday, November 4

10:30 pm

DC Week Opening Party : DC Week kicks off with a party at the 9:30 Club featuring performances from eight different bands, including Tom’s band Teen Mom, a trio who plays fuzz-pop love ballads. We’ll be there in force to celebrate.

Saturday, November 5

Noon to 5:00 pm

Bridging DC’s Digital Divide : This event, led by the nonprofit Bread for the City, will feature a series of discussions on how to bring more and better broadband access to DC residents.

1:00–2:30 pm

Temporary Urbanism Explored : Pop up storefronts are becoming increasingly popular in DC. This event, hosted at the National Building Museum, will look at this technique and others for activating abandoned spaces in emerging neighborhoods.

Sunday, November 6

8:00 am — 6:00 pm

DC Week Hackathon : In true DC fashion, this hackathon will get folks using government resources — like services, programs, procurement, and data — to build apps that entrepreneurs and small businesses can use to better take advantage of these resources. Results will be judged, with a prize pool of $20,000.

Noon to 1:30 pm

Photography for Good: Slideshows + Discussion : This event will feature the work of three photographers who are bringing awareness to social issues through their photography, followed by a panel discussion on their work, its impact, and how others can get involved.
