Alex Barth
Lead Developer
Alex is a lead developer at Development Seed, where he has used his talent of seeing how to make good tools better to improve some of our largest and hardest projects. Alex brings his insights to bear on guiding the development of semantic API's, leading large data management projects, and solving systems interoperability challenges, to name a few.
Alex has led the development of our news and data aggregator Managing News, now in a public beta release, since its conception more than three years ago. His role as the main architect of Managing News has given him uncommon experience and expertise in developing large scale Drupal applications, as he hunted down problems like how to handle data in Drupal when a single system aggregates two million nodes in a matter of days. He's also built many of the technical tools that allowed us to solve these problems in Drupal. He's the creator of the Feeds module (and the co-creator and co-maintainer of it's precursor FeedAPI module) and the Data module, and has recently contributed to the OpenID Attribute Exchange support in Drupal. Alex regularly presents on his technical work and the larger topics of aggregation and building a product on an open source framework at technology conferences, including DrupalCon.
Before joining Development Seed, Alex managed information technology for a development organization in Central America, where he became involved in the Central American open source community. In his free time, Alex has designed interactive robots and virtual reality interfaces, organized a traveling exhibit depicting life in Nicaragua and its sweatshops, and taken photos of his life and travels in Washington, DC, Nicaragua, and Austria.
