We are looking for two smart and creative full time developers to join the team at one of our international development partners and work closely with us. We are starting a major custom platform build and are working with the partner to help grow their team. We are going to be working with the partner for a solid 12 months, so we want to find people who like our style and know our work, since it is going to feel like we are on the same team.
While passion to use your skills to help world changing organizations is key and past professional experience is not the biggest priority, we have some very real job requirements:
- Expert in PHP and MySQL, and comfortable with CSS
- Solid knowledge of Drupal, particularly the Context, Spaces and Features stack and a love for Drush. (Note: Python hackers with a strong desire to dive deep into Drupal are also encouraged to apply.)
- Desire to work closely with a passionate team to build amazing tools and a realistic understanding that 40 hour work weeks are not how amazing tools get built.
- Ability to discern “commander’s intent” and get things done by being creative and resourceful, with a desire to take ownership over tasks.
- Appreciation for documenting your own code, writing tests for your code, and making useful comments when using version control.
- Commitment to a GTD system and the ability to effectively communicate about actionable tasks.
- Enjoys reading code.
- Likes a fierce game of foosball.
- Interest in working in an agile development environment. We like to scrum.
- Ok to travel 3+ months a year, globally.
- Fluent English speaker. Fluency in other languages is a huge bonus.
Ideally, you’ll also:
- Be a great writer.
- Have an understanding of the situations in which international development and humanitarian relief groups work.
- Have worked with other open source communities.
- Know Python.
- Have some experience with mapping and GIS tools.
- Have read some of Edward Tufte.
- Have a BA.
- Have a decent artistic sensibility.
- Share family BBQ recipes.
Both of these positions will be full time and located in Washington, DC. (P.S. Don’t worry about visas. We will help take care of those things for the right person, if needed. But it is not ok to telecommute). The salary will be competitive.
How to apply
If you’re interested, please send a brief note about yourself, some sample applications or pieces of code (and an explanation of why you are sending them), a link to a Managing News site you’ve made with some customizations to the maps, a Feature you made for a Drupal site, your CV, and anything else from your portfolio that you’d want us to see to jobs@developmentseed.org.
