GeoDC Meetup on Wednesday, January 27

Mapping Haiti, Washington, DC, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The next GeoDC meetup will take place on Wednesday, January 27th, starting at 7:00 pm. This will be a particularly exciting meetup as many of our members have been heavily involved with CrisisCamp's response to the earthquake in Haiti. We'll get a chance to hear from folks from FortiusOne on the mapping projects started to aid relief and recovery efforts, the progress made, and how the community plans to move forward.

In addition to this discussion, we'll also have three short presentations:

  • Barney Krucoff, GIS Manager of DC's Office of the Chief Technology Officer, will speak about the city's GIS program.

  • Janet Nackoney, PhD student in Geography at the University of Maryland, will present on her upcoming field work in participatory GIS and land use planning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  • Andrew Ross of Development Alternatives International will talk about recent GIS work conducted in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

GeoDC is a meetup group aimed at bringing together people doing mapping work in Washington, DC, to share knowledge, brainstorm, and network. If you'd like to RSVP for the meetup or volunteer to present, just head on over to the group's Ning site. You can also follow GeoDC on Twitter.

The event will be held at Stetson's Famous Bar and Grill located at 1610 U Street NW, in easy walking distance from either the Dupont Circle metro stop on the Red Line or the U Street stop on the Green Line. We've got the upstairs bar reserved.

Hope to see you there!
