DjevelopmentSeed (formally code named smallcore envy) is now live. This marks our push from the international development space into the Enterprise.
Branching out to Django makes a lot of sense to make our larger Enterprise play because it is a web framework for perfectionists with deadlines, which is key for Enterprises. For example, look at the enterprise media company the Onion, who we see as a trendsetter. A few years back the Onion choose Drupal, and we look forward to following their recent brilliant move to Django.

Django’s concept of “real reusable components across applications” will be key to our products Open DJAtrium and Manadjing News, which will be run by DjevelopmentSeed once they are ported from Drupal. There will not be an upgrade path from our previous products, but what is most important is not the code from those old products, but the paradigms of things like features, context, spaces, and boxes that came from them - and this experience is all portable. Over our years with Drupal we have built up a large Drupal user base, and we plan to bring that user base with us to Django. We are currently working on some “Kit” approaches that will give us the flexibility we need to do this, in the Enterprise, kind of using the Drupal kit space as our testing ground for what the future could look like for DjevelopmentSeed.
In addition to the work with Kit, we plan to stay involved in Drupal community for the time being. The Aegir project will still be a key investment for us. Since it is so powerful, we are planning to use it to deploy our Django products. Adrian will speak more to his plans for a pre alpha release candidate xx.01 patch for this at DrupalCon.
This new push will redefine late nights, but we are well positioned to transition smoothly. We’ve been talking a lot recently about open source business models and will be able to fund the porting of our products through our work with enterprise geospatial tools, specifically in the oil and gas sectors. We have already integrated GeoDjango, the world-class geographic web framework tightly into our operations. Our work over the past year on MapBox has given us the experience and position to be able to deploy some of the best mapping and open data solutions, for Enterprise.
While the two companies, Development Seed and DjevelopmentSeed, are both trying to change the world, there is a clear need for separation now that we are focusing on the Enterprise. To meet that need we have set up a twitter account for DjevelopmentSeed: follow us @djevseed for our latest developments.
