Drupal, Mapping, and One Laptop Per Child This Week in Washington, DC

We hope everyone had a happy Labor Day yesterday. Even though it’s a short one this week post-holiday, there is still a lot going on in the technology world this week in Washington, DC. In addition to a few big events – including the Gov 2.0 Expo and Summit happening at the Convention Center this week and CongressCamp taking place this weekend – there are several interesting meetups lined up on Drupal, mapping, One Laptop Per Child, and tweeting for a good cause. Tuesday, September 8

7:30 pm

One Laptop Per Child Seminar: HacDC is hosting a discussion led by the community content direct of the One Laptop per Child project on the progress of the initiative and what hardware and software is being used. A new working prototype of One Laptop per Child’s new XO-1.5 laptop will also be shown, which has a newer, faster processor, more memory, and dual boots onto Gnome desktop and the child-friendly Sugar Learning Platform.

Wednesday, September 9

6:30 pm

NOVA Drupal Meetup: If you missed DrupalCon Paris last week or just want to share your experiences, come out for this meetup and DrupalCon debriefing. These meetups are also a great way to meet local Drupal developers and users of all levels.

Thursday, September 10

7:00 – 11:00 pm

Washington Twestival: The DC Twestival will bring together people in person and on twitter to advocate for donations to a great local cause – Miriam’s Kitchen, which provides meals and case management services to homeless people in Washington, DC.

Saturday, September 12

10:00 am

Mapping the Zoo: Volunteers are gathering on Saturday for a mapping party to help provide accurate, detailed maps of the National Zoo on Open Street Map, an open source mapping platform. Come out, grab a GPS device, and help map the zoo – and be ready to learn about micro-mapping, GIS, and the Open Street Map project along the way!
