Mobile Apps, CMSs, Social Media, and Contests This Week in Washington, DC

There are a lot of tech-related events happening this week in Washington, DC, including some great meetups, a couple speed trainings, a geeky open mic night, and even a contest. Monday, May 11

5:30 – 8:30

Making a Successful Mobile App: iPhone, Android & More: This part training, part networking event will walk you through how to create a mobile phone app and then how to get people using it. It will also be a great way to meet the people behind some of the apps that you put on your phone.

7:00 – 9:00 pm

DC Drupal Meetup: Drupal is one of the leading open source content management systems, and this town is home to large and active community around it. Come out for this event to meet some local developers, hear about what people are doing with Drupal, and learn more about the platform.

Tuesday, May 12

11:00 am – 6:00 pm

“Women Who Tech TeleSummit ":http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5266/t/5804/signUp.jsp?key=935: It’s no secret that women are severely under represented in the field of technology. This telesummit is trying to change that by bringing women in the field together, having smart, geeky women lead all the sessions, and by taking them all out for drinks afterwards.

Make A Website Using WordPress In One Hour: This quick crash course in WordPress will show you how to build a website – from install to launch – and then how to market it. If you’ve ever been curious about what you can do with WordPress, or just want a new website fast, come out for this meetup.

Social Networking and the Semantic Web: Curious about how social networking and the semantic web fit together? Come out for this event, featuring a discussion by Mills Davis of Project 10X about new developments in social networking and semantic technologies within government and private industry.

Thursday, May 14

6:00 – 10:00 pm

Ignite DC: Got something to say to DC? Ignite DC is your chance to say it – in 5 minutes or less and with just 20 slides. This open mic night brings together artists, technologists, entrepreneurs, and philosophers to share one of their takes with the crowd.

Sunday, May 17

9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Social Citizen Sunday: Grab your camera and cell phone and hit the streets this Sunday. The folks behind Apps for Democracy are hosting a contest for people to use social media skills to capture and produce reports on the problems in DC and the ideas of citizens on how to improve them. These reports will then inform the focus of the upcoming Apps for Democracy contest.
