Week in DC Tech: June 1 Edition

Government 2.0 and Open Source This Week in Washington, DC

There are several interesting technology events lined up this week in Washington, DC, including a discussion at the Center for American Progress today on government 2.0 technologies, a government sponsored TED Talk on Wednesday, and several fun open source events scattered throughout the rest of the week. Below are the events we’re hoping to catch, and you can find a full list of what’s happening in DC over at DC Tech Events.

Monday, June 1

Noon to 1:30 pm

Web 2.0 and the Federal Government: How the government uses technology has already drastically changed in the almost six months since Obama took office. This panel discussion will talk about what it means to integrate collaborative web technologies into the federal government and the challenges and ramifications it brings. There are some interesting people on the panel – including Tim O’Reilly – so it should be a great conversation.

Tuesday, June 2

6:30 pm

Northern Virginia Drupal Meetup: Into Drupal, or curious as to why it’s the leading open source CMS? Come out to this meetup to talk about the platform and meet with local developers. The floor will be open for short presentations, and there will be a conversation about DrupalCon Paris in September.

Wednesday, June 3

2:30 – 4:30 pm

TED@State: This discussion, taking place at the State Department, will look at how to bring innovation to international development work, focusing on partnerships and of course technology. It should be a great conversation, with panelists working in global health, poverty reduction, and technology in the government and private sector. Eric will be in the audience – stop by and say hi if you’re there.

Thursday, June 4

7:00 pm

Washington Mozilla June Meetup: Want to learn more about the Mozilla project and how you can get involved? Check out this event to meet a rep from Mozilla’s team and others interested in the project.

Saturday, June 6

8:00 am

Open Source Code Jam: Apps for Democracy – a contest to crowd source building web apps with DC government data – is at it again, this time asking for web apps that use the city’s help line API. On Saturday, participants are getting together to talk about which open source technologies make sense to use for the contest and then get down to work. Come out to join in on the fun.

Hope to see you out this week!
