Summer is definitely here in Washington, DC, with temperatures inching up this week and the streets considerably more deserted than usual. Although things may be slowing down elsewhere in the city, there are still quite a few interesting technology events happening this week. Below is a look at the events that caught our eye. You can find a full listing of events at DC Tech Events.

Commercial Cloud Computing July Meetup: At this meetup, techies, business owners, and others will talk about the benefits of cloud computing, the pitfalls, and why it’s the big new thing. This event will specifically look at how businesses can do more in the cloud.

Thursday, July 16

GeoDC Meetup: In its very first meetup, local mappers and GEO enthusiasts will get together to talk about some of the projects they’re working on and get to know each other. There will also be a presentation on DC government geo projects being done at OCTO Labs, including the new Circulator mapping app and a new open data group Mapping DC. If you go, say hi to Will and Tom!

Smart Tools For Smart Power: Simulations and Serious Games for Peace Building: This one day showcase held by the U.S. Institute of Peace will show off new simulations and serious gaming tools that are being developed to help peace building organizations, including development agencies and the military, better train, plan their efforts, and collaborate with one another.

7:00 pm

Refresh DC July Meetup: Up to Speed on HTML5 and CSS3: With the launch of Google’s Chrome OS and better browser support for HTML5 and CSS3 standards, these technologies are becoming more important. This meetup will talk about why that is, what it means, and how you can begin using them.

Saturday, July 18

8:00 pm

BeerCamp at nclud Studio: How do you throw a party and make sure the geeks come out? According to nclud, you call it a Camp. On Saturday they’re throwing a party in their office to kick back, meet new people, and enjoy a few libations.

Have a great week!
