Week in DC Tech: Inaugural Edition

Technology in Governance, Art, and More Parties

It’s been an exciting and invigorating week so far in Washington, DC, with of course the Inauguration of Barack Obama yesterday, all of the celebrations, rallies, and balls around it, and the influx of millions of people onto the streets. Now with the streets and metro stations all reopened and Obama already down to work, it’s time to sink our teeth back into the world of tech – with an eye toward innovation, service, and change. Let’s do it. : )

There are several interesting events happening this week, many looking at how Obama’s administration will use technology or looking at continuing the parties of the week so far. For our picks of the week, read below, and for a full listing of the week’s goings on in technology, check out DC Tech Events.

Wednesday, January 21

2:00 – 3:30 pm

Internet Advocacy Roundtable, Special Event: Netroots Nation and Think Progress will participate in a panel discussion on how technology and new media tools can be used to improve governance under the Obama administration. This is no doubt a hot topic in town right now, and the unveiling of the new WhiteHouse.gov is only fueling it. Seats are all reserved but you can watch this online.

6:00 pm

Future of New Art Technologies Lecture: New media like mp3s, online videos, and digital photos have become a big part of many museums. But how do you preserve these? The media conservator at Museum of Modern Art will talk about what they’re doing to conserve multimedia.

7:00 pm

DC PHP Beverage Subgroup: Get together for beers with other PHP developers – with no agenda, no sales pitch, and a great beer selection at the Brickskeller.

Thursday, January 22

6:00 – 9:00 pm

Twin Tech III: This party gets people from all sorts of technology backgrounds and brings them together, and it’s the biggest one going in town. Don’t believe me? 2,000 people rsvped already, making it waiting list only at this point.

Hope to see you out this week!
