Despite the unseasonably warm weather in Washington, DC this weekend (90 degrees in April!) and the swine flu outbreak that luckily hasn’t made it here yet, things are chugging along as usual in the city. As usual, there are a lot of technology events happening this week, with a couple particularly interesting ones (to us at least) on using mobile technologies for social change and opening up data to be made available on the geospatial web. In addition to those, there are some great bar and dinner meetups scheduled. Below are the events we’re hoping to catch this week. A full listing can be found at DC Tech Events.
Tuesday, April 28
6:00 – 8:00 pm
DCPHP Beverage Subgroup: Like to unwind after work with a couple beers, but crave talking shop too? The DCPHP Beverage Subgroup is just that – a chance to talk code over drinks.
Wednesday, April 29
10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Mobile Tech 4 Social Change: This barcamp style event will bring together nonprofits, mobile developers, researchers, and others to demo tools, network, and discuss approaches for using mobile phones to bring about social change around the world. This event booked up fast, but organizers will be live blogging it here. If you’re attending, look for Will White and ask him about the mobile framework he built for Drupal and how it can be used.
12:30 – 2:00 pm
The World Bank and the Geospatial Web_: GIS is widely accessible, but the data that drives it isn’t. This presentation will look at how open source software and web 2.0 technologies can create an infrastructure to support open data that everyone can access. Robert Soden will be at this one. Feel free to ask him about the work he’s been doing to make mapping data more accessible in six African countriesmap.
Friday, May 1
7:00 – 10:00 pm
Northern Virginia Girl Geek Dinner #3: It’s no secret that girls are still the minority in the tech field, which can make it hard to meet other women working on the same issues as you. That’s where the Girl Geek Dinner comes in. If you’re a geeky girl, come out to talk with others over food and drinks.
Hope to see you out this week!
