Week in DC Tech: September 22 Edition
Drupal, ICT4D, and Politics, How Very DC
Happy “One Web Day”;http://onewebday.org! For those not familiar with the new holiday, it’s “like Earth Day for the Internet” – an opportunity to celebrate the internet and it’s awesomeness and also do a little something to make sure it keeps headed down the right path. Here in DC the One Web Day team is putting together an e-democracy time capsule (which will be great for archival reasons and to get some laughs in 20 years when techies look at the stuff we thought was cutting edge). There’s still a couple hours to submit your stories and videos about e-democracy, internet policy, and what you think the future holds. And in case you were wondering why the metro was extra crowded this morning, it’s Car Free DC day. I hope you remembered to bike or metro to work.In addition to the holidays, there are a lot of other tech events happening around the city this week. Here are the ones we’re hoping to attend, and you can find a full schedule of the week over at DC Tech Events. Hope to see you out this week!*Monday, September 22*7:15 – 9:00 pm“DC Drupal Meetup”:http://groups.drupal.org/node/14805: This will be an exciting one. Not only are local Drupalers back from DrupalCon Szeged with stories and updates, but we have news about the next Drupal conference. Come out to Stetson’s at 7:15 pm to hear the latest.*Tuesday, September 23*5:30 pm“ICT4D Happy Hour”:http://intlrel.meetup.com/76/calendar/8632673/: Breaking from the usual format of great presentations by international development folks using new technology, the ICT4D group is instead hosting a happy hour. This should be a great time to better get to know others in ICT4D.7:00 pm“BRAINSTORM: What would you do with the ultimate advocacy toolbox?”:http://netsquared.meetup.com/2/calendar/8631732/ Grassroots campaigners for the upcoming elections and other online organizers, this is an event for you. Social Actions – a new toolset that aggregates campaign tools and makes them available for free use – will be leading a discussion about how organizers like yourselves can use the tool. *Thursday, September 25*8:30 – 10:00 am“Technology Salon: USAID ICT4D Challenges”:http://wayan.com/2008/09/technology-salon-usaid-ict4d.html: USAID is running several ICT4D contests to spur tech innovations for development. If you’re intrigued, come out to the Technology Salon for an intimate discussion about the challenges. 12:30 – 2:00 pm“Technology-Enabled Development: An India Experience”:http://www.irex.org/programs/techseries/index.asp: ICT has done some amazing things for development, and we’re really just hitting the tip of what’s possible. This talk will focus on the merits of a community based model for ICT4D efforts and tell some success stories about how technology has helped get fisherman timely information, increase literacy, and facilitate microfinance work. 3:30 – 5:00 pm“Mobile for Nonprofits”:http://us.oneworld.net/organizations/nonprofitpartners/learn/workshop/mobile/0908: Using mobile phones for outreach is becoming easier – and more effective. This panel discussion will look at how nonprofits have used mobiles successfully for outreach and how you can integrate cell phones into your overall communications strategy. *Friday, September 26*9:00 pmPresidential Debate: Being DC, there are a lot of parties planned. The Progressive Happy crew will be watching from the Left Bank, the Red Derby is hosting a party, and I’m sure a crowd of mostly blue-shirted people will gather at Stetsons.
